1) Is Competent ... He has run his family farm (originally owned by his parents) and has transformed it into an extremely successful operation. 2) Is Honest...He is open and honest about his beliefs, and seems to enjoy sharing those beliefs and ideas through speaking and through his blog. 3) Is Respectful ...He has always appeared to me to be respectful of all people, and even displays respect for his animals and for the land that he farms. 4) Has Integrity ... I have no question about his integrity. He is guided by his religious faith and by the compulsion to do what is right. 5) Has Courage ... He goes against the grain in his beliefs about how real farming needs to be done, rejecting things like GMOs and chemical farming, and he openly shares his vision and beliefs through speaking and writing, with apparently no fear of any backlash. 6) Has a Proven Record... He has made his farm, Polyface, a successful operation, using traditional, sensible farming methods.
Joel Salatin has proven that regenerative agriculture and polyculture is not only sustainable and affordable, but the way forward for fixing our soil. He walks the walk, and welcomes and teaches everyone how to successfully do their part on any level of time commitment. If large farms had the support and training they could convert their farms into polyculture regenerative farms as Joel has done. If we all follow his leadership we could fix climate problems and health problems in America.
It’s common to hear things like “regenerative agriculture sounds great, but it won’t work at scale; we can’t rely on these methods to feed the world.” There’s an implicit assumption that chemical methods have become an indisputable requirement in order to produce enough food. However, that argument also rests upon premises like: agriculture should be centralized, food should be produced by large enterprises, the average citizen can’t be expected to become involved in the food system (besides being a consumer), etc.
Joel has demonstrated the feasibility of regenerative agriculture at a scale that calls these things into question. Many people have rallied around his ideas and he’s become a household name for homesteaders and small-scale farmers. Corporate entities like Chick-fil-a have expressed interest as well, but that interest in stymied by their ties to the big players in our food system. What we need here is sincere, deeply convictional, and time-tested leadership. Joel’s informal status as “America’s Farmer” lends him tremendous credibility, as well as his proven track record of success at Polyface since the 1960s.
I was going to nominate him too. He would also be great in the environmental department as he has common sense. I hear farmers say that things don’t work on a large scale. Sadly this means poisons and some other practices that are terrible for the soil (nutrient denseness) and the environment. We need someone in office who can give alternatives and help for farmers who don’t think they have other options.
Would love to see Joel Salatin in the administration. Creating nutrient dense food and restoring our soils would be amazing for the country’s economy and our health.
This gentlemen exudes excellence in this particular field. His experience and wide breadth of knowledge are just what the Dept of Agriculture needs to turn the ship around in the right direction. Please seriously consider him for appointment in the Trump Administration. God speed
Joel would lead us down a path of a regenerative future, that would rebuild our soils, bring us better food and bring community and local foods back as a focus. He will help America and Americans more food resilient.
Glad to see someone beat me to nominating Joel Salatin for Secretary of Agriculture. As a fourth generation farmer who grew up surrounded by the successes of Big Hugh Bennet’s 1930’s Soil Conservation Service projects to stop the dust bowl in Kansas, adopting regenerative agriculture practices on my farm 25 years ago seemed right as rain.
Not only has Joel has shown the world how to do regenerative agriculture and why it’s good for Ma earth, he has also shown the world that working WITH nature is far more profitable than the way Big Ag wants farmers to do it - battling nature with their Godforsaken monocultures, using exorbitantly pricey gargantuan tractors, implements, toxic pesticides and patented seeds.
I have several of his books on my shelves. I recommend Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal.
As someone who knows Joel on both a personal and professional level, I can attest that he is the real deal. He’s the same guy on Saturday night as he is on Sunday morning. He, like RFK and Trump, has faced decades of opposition and abuse. And, has done so with unwavering courage and resolve. He is steadfast in his beliefs and is loyal to the core.
When making decisions on people raising animals please remember that not everyone wants to raise just cattle, sheep, goats and chickens. There are 100000 people in America that choose to successfully raise and care for alternative livestock. As you may know the government raided and stole a giraffe and a Squirrel that made headlines. That behavior needs to stop. Loving caring people raise everything from hissing cock roaches to zebras and every species in-between. Www.twobytwo4u.org
He is a great resource, but I am concerned he will not have the time to dedicate to this. Also he doesn’t exactly practice sustainable agriculture because he uses Cornish cross chickens. I think if he used heritage breeds I would be much more likely to agree. Mostly I don’t know if he can dedicate the time necessary while still operating his farm, classes and other ventures
I attended the Two Days of Truth Summit featuring Sayer Ji & Sina McCullough PhD at Joel Salatin’s farm this year.
Seeing how the farm operates is amazing and every food served from the farm is super satisfying, no need for snacks!
Joel Salatin is definitely a resource for farmers.
Oh and did you know his mom lives on the farm and is close to 100 years old?
Must be something he’ s doing right!
